Hi I'm Colleen Kelly The resident blogger !. Welcome !.

Hi I’m Colleen Kelly The resident blogger !. Welcome !.

I’m re-posting this because www.MichiganScents.com  is a favorite site of mine and they have something NEW going on I think is interesting and exciting!. So I have made the addition to this past post  and am posting it once again..

Thanks!)

Do you like shopping?

I love shopping.  Have you ever shopped online? It can be a great, fast and easy way to do some shopping.   Now add the fun of shopping to being able to help others at the same time!

Jackpot!   Right?  You bet!!.

Here are 3 great websites, that combine the fun of shopping AND doing a little good along the way!.

First up…..

1.  www.MichiganScents.com

This is a great website. If you need a really nice gift for someone, this is the place!.  Candles are something I think most everyone would love to receive as a gift.

Right off the bat, www.MichiganScents.com is inviting and relaxing and easy to navigate.

I think most everyone I know and most likely you as well,  likes candles.  This site has something new  .  “Candles For A Cause”.

Which makes it one of my favorite  “sites with a heart” .  With this addition to the site, you get in touch with Michigan Scents and together with them you’ll work on creating your own candle for whatever fundraiser or cause you’re supporting!.   Available as well, are fundraising Kits and fundraising accounts you can start with them. (Which I thought was really cool.)  They even have special pages with candles made for Breast Cancer awareness and  the American Cancer society.

One of the best things about Michigan Scents is  $3 dollars of every “Candles for a Cause” goes directly to organizations that support those efforts.

Oh, one other fact about www.MichiganScents.com is that everything is made in the USA!

These are hand poured, soy based candles that come in different sizes, along with soy tarts that are perfect for tealight use.  (They are so pretty.)

They have “candle catoring” and Private label, Events with designed labels available for special occasions, (weddings, showers, business needs.. etc.)

There is a scent for everyday and holidays and with scents like Happy Pumpkin, Cake, Hot Toddy, Clothes Line, Sparkling Snow, Happy Birthday, Summertime, Candy Cane, Beach and NEW scents Orange Peel, Freshly Brewed, Lemongrass and Pearberry, so many and even more to choose from on the site.  The Candles created by www.MichiganScents.com  are carefully done so that they are dead on Perfect!.  (I happen to own a few, so I can say that!) Michigan Scents offers so much, something for everyone!.

I’m excited to tell you Michigan Scents now has a KickStarter Project !!

For the FIRST Electric Petal Warmer….. MADE IN THE USA!.

(Michigan Scents KickStarter Link below )

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/692757419/electric-petal-warmer-first-ever-made-in-the-usa

So What IS KickStarter…… and how can I help ?

Project creators set a funding goal and deadline. If people like a project, they can pledge money to make it happen. Funding on KickStarter is all-or-nothing — projects must reach their funding goals to receive any money. All-or-nothing funding might seem scary, but it’s amazingly effective in creating momentum and rallying people around an idea. To date, an impressive 44% of projects have reached their funding goals.

Got the idea?

This is a favorite site of mine like I said. !  I wanted to let everyone know about the chance to become a small part of something really great!!.

The chance to be a part of something creative.

The chance to help out a company produce Made in the USA products is exciting.

It’s always a great feeling to help those reaching for their dreams and www.MichiganScents.com  is a worthy, innovative and smart company to look into!

You’ll be glad you did!

2.  www.GoodShop.com

On this site you can get coupons for online sites such as Best Buy and Macy’s.   The charity you choose will get a portion of the purchase price when you choose them.

This site has so many categories to choose from you can just about find anything you want here!.  You can even help to do more good out there by spreading the word about the site, from the “spread the word”, page link on www.GoodShop.com

They have  2,800 participating stores (from Amazon to Zazzle) and a percentage of what you spend will be donated to your cause at no cost to you.  Goodshop lists more than 100,000 coupons and deals so you could save money while you are doing good for others.

One place on the site called “Good Dining” allows you to dine at one of their 10,000 participating restaurants around the country and a percentage of what you spend will go to your cause – again at no cost to you.

They also offer you what they call “Good To go add ons” –The  GoodShop To-Go Button, GoodApp Toolbar and Goodsearch Plug-in all install in less than 30 seconds and help you to earn donations for your favorite cause when you shop! You don’t need to go to the site first!.

Since 2006′ Goodshop has users have raised more that 9 million dollars and they have participated in over 1.1 billion charitable actions!.  A reason to be a proud user of www.GoodShop.com

When you give to more than just yourself shopping can be even more fun.
When you give to more than just yourself shopping can be even more fun.

3. www.Giftsthatgive.com

First of all I like the way the site looks which is a big plus really.  It made me smile right off!. I liked the way it looks. It gets your attention fast and is nice to look at.  This site is also easy to use.

1. You find the cause you like.

2. Choose your cause.

3. Shop for what you want,  then you check out!.

They ask you spread the word about the site, but hey, it’s doing even more good so no biggie. Donations of 10.00 or more are tax-deductible. IF you don’t see a cause you wish to give to, your donation will simply default to their featured charity on the homepage.

www.Giftsthatgive.com also have a link to Facebook where you can start your own fundraiser now.

They have tons of categories and many, many brands you can choose from and I didn’t think the prices were that bad either!

.                                               *******************

All three of these Site are to be recommended for their really great merchandise but I would like to commend and thank them for their generosity of spirit and for doing something that not every website that would like you to try their product does…

Give back.

Thanks for coming. I hope you found something here today that can help you!.  I appreciate you taking your times to come to the blog!

Have you ever used any of these great sites? If not do you think you will now ?   Please let me know below by leaving a comment below!

In the morning of December 14th, 2012  In the Village of Sandy Hook in Newtown Connecticut ,  a man walked into The Sandy Hook Elementary school…..

and before he killed himself,  shot 27 people.

20 of whom………….

were children…. in the first grade.

The other 7 people were adults that worked at the school.

(Please click below to see story)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epJo_ic_wds

This story  happened in Connecticut but I doubt there is anyone in this Country who hasn’t heard it…

Staff Sargent Jordan Pritchard  lives in Nashville Tennessee.  He heard the story as we all did.

This is Marine Staff Sargent Jordan Pritchard.

This is Marine Staff Sargent Jordan Pritchard.

Like everyone else,   he was shocked and horrified.

He was so moved by it wanted to do something.

What could he do to change what had happened?…Nothing.

No one could…. but like so many,  he wanted to reach out and do something to make a positive differenceStaff Sargent. Pritchard did just that.  The Father of two children,  he understood the feeling’s of those parents who were so horrified that day.  He went to his closet and he took his Uniform out of retirement.  He put on that uniform and went down to Gower elementary school.

(Please Click the link below to hear Sargent Pritchard in his own words)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wmpRHJXz7c

“If you are able and capable of doing something, you have the responsibility to act,”   Pritchard told the press.

The Teachers and Parents were all grateful to Sargent Pritchard and were all happy he was there.

The Teachers and Parents were all grateful to Sargent Pritchard and were all happy he was there.

He also told the press. “I feel this is the least I can do as a parent,”

Some people think placing soldiers outside of schools is the wrong answer to this problem.  That’s not what this story is about.

This is about one man who was so moved by others fears and concerns and worries that he decided to take action.

After one of the most terrible school shootings in this country’s history this Marine Staff Sargent wanted to make a difference.

Unarmed,   he went to Gower elementary School (where his children also attend) and  on THAT day, During THAT Week, at THAT school….. parents and most importantly for those children, who heard what had happened in Connecticut and were scared…………..there was peace of mind.

It’s about one mans decision, to try to make things better for the people in his community, for the many parents who were scared to let their children go the next morning,

for the children.

Making a difference

You don’t have to do something BIG or HUGE to make a difference. Sometimes something small……………… can BE HUGE to someone else.

To the children and their parents this act …was huge.

The children showed their thanks by giving Sargent Pritchard handmade cards and letters.

The children showed their thanks by giving Sargent Pritchard handmade cards and letters.

And his as for his own children, they knew “Dad” was just outside watching out for them.

What It Comes Down To

Have you had something your going through and it’s  really tough, really draining and someone does something to change that for the better?.  It doesn’t take something earth-shaking to do that either.

You can do little things like open a door, tell a joke, or just give a smile to someone.

Showing another person you care or a show of friendship can go

a….L O N G  way!.

It’s just a simple case of caring for one another , taking the time and then taking an action to show that you care.   Trying to see each others cares and concerns as important as our own…….

I know it can be difficult at times….

But people like Staff Sargent Jordan Pritchard are great role models

for us all.

Thanks for coming!!  I appreciate it when you take a few moments to stop by and read the blog 🙂

Hi I'm Colleen Kelly your blogger :) Welcome!

Hi I’m Colleen Kelly your blogger 🙂 Welcome!

“The person you put out there everyday effects everyone around you.”

I know that’s an obvious statement.  But I don’t think we are usually thinking about  that fact….when all we can think about…. is what is upsetting us.

For instance:

You’re feeling pretty good, you go out and spend time hanging out with a friend.  You spend a couple of hours or so with them and then you go home feeling crappy, but for the life of you,

you can’t figure out exactly why.

A possible reason:  That friend you spent time with was in a bad mood or maybe was upset about something while you were with them or maybe didn’t have many positive things to say……. about anything.

Am I right?

As you can see; how we are feeling can affect others in a not so obvious and as in THIS GUY, A VERY obvious way...

As you can see; how we are feeling can affect others in a not so obvious and as in THIS GUY, A VERY obvious way…

Mom Was Wrong !?.  I’m Not… Perfect !? 🙂

One day, I caught myself feeling and acting frustrated.  My Dad called me into the room to ask me a question.  I answered him. On my way out of the room I realized…….I was short with him.  😦

What did he do ?

Answer:  Nothing at all.

It was me.

I try really hard not to do that, you know, when something is bothering me, realize I’m in a bad mood and stop myself from taking it out on others.

I’m actually pretty good at it.

When I took care of my Mom, there were a few times in those ten years I was really worried or scared.   I NEVER ONCE let her see that though.  I got really good of being scared and smiling through it, or making a joke to cover it.

For instance, the power goes out……..Not a big deal… right?

Not in the average situation, no.

But  when the power goes out in a situation as we had,  and your Mom is in a hospital bed, with oxygen, and 5 other pieces of equipment that all run on electricity, that moment when you know your best friend and your Mom,  is NOT getting any more oxygen… is something I can’t quite explain.

To say it can be frightening and scary ……..is an understatement.

So I became THE champ, at putting on a good face and making a joke with her about the power going out.  Seeing her smiling back, or laughing at me , or like my Mom, God love her, rolling her eyes at my running around as to say  ” Coll, relax babe”,  while I was in warp speed recovery mode, smiling, kidding with her,  all the time making light of the entire thing….. was everything.

She saw ME calm…….. so SHE was calm.

I’m proud that I never let her see any of my fear and kept her from being afraid.   That was all that mattered.

But on this day , with my Dad,  It slipped out.

I felt bad….. and even more frustrated!.  Because now, on top of feeling crappy and frustrated about what was bothering me,  I now felt crappy about being short with him.

Ever been there?

Just so you know, and don’t hate me (lol), I did something extra nice for my Dad to make up for it , and  I did apologize for being short.

It’s okay to be human.  But what we put out there everyday affects others so much in so many ways and we don’t even realize it.

Not everyone is perfect at hiding their emotions.  Lets face it, it can be hard sometimes.  Like I said we are only human.

imagesCAG3CIZX
I did learn from my Mom,  so much.

One of the MANY things was this:

One of the best things you will ever do for others and yourself is to be kind when you don’t feel like it.

If I can explain how it feel for me,  it’s like this:

I feel like every time I don’t feel the best version of myself, and I make the effort to be that best version of me,  it strengthens my heart and soul,  and that best version of me becomes bigger and stronger…….

and the lesser version …..less.

A simple act of kindness can change the course of a life. Maybe yours.

A simple act of kindness can change the course of a life. Maybe yours.

It can be so difficult at times but…

The next time you feel frustrated or upset about something, and you’re in the position of dealing with others take that breath.  Step back from the situation for a moment.

And………..1,  2,  3 Breathe.

It can be tough to do.  But it pays off.

Even in the middle of your bad day and how bad you’re feeling the last thing you really want to do… is ruin someone else’s day too, or make it harder for someone else to deal with whatever they might be struggling to deal with on that day.

You never know when someone is looking to you for a kind word or smile that can help them through possibly something THEY are thinking about,  that like you, has them frustrated too !.

You just never know how much you can effect others.

So whenever you can…. Make it a positive effect.!!!

Thanks for coming to the blog guys.. I always appreciate you taking time to stop by.  Hey, have you ever been in that situation? how do you handle it when you are feeling in a bad place and you have to deal with others? Did someone ever make the difference in YOUR day for the better when you needed that good word?

Leave a comment below!    I would really appreciate the feedback! 🙂

3 Reasons You Should Join Twitter.. Now!!

New blog twitter

Hi my name is Colleen Kelly :) Your resident blogger on "Reach For More."

Hi my name is Colleen Kelly 🙂 Your resident blogger on “Reach For More.”

Do you “Tweet?”

imagesCA99KP0Q

No, not “Tweety”  ……

I’m asking if you ……… “Tweet”

Twitter bird

As in this little guy over there.  You know… “Tweet”

<<<<< here…… as in …Twitter

None of my immediate friends use Twitter. (I really can’t believe that!!.) I even took a little poll on my Facebook page before I wrote this post to see who might have started or possibly, might explain why they don’t use it.

One said they thought they would be “bored” and another said they were lucky they could get on the internet at all because they aren’t really “a computer person.”

I could be all technical about this, but I thought the best way to sell you on Twitter would be what I have gotten since I started using it!.    That’s really what will convince you, and heck, I’m not good at being technical. 🙂

Connecting With Friends

imagesCAHWHQ38

I started using Facebook because I wanted to be able to talk with someone more. To keep in better touch with them.  My friend got me into Twitter… and Facebook actually!.  My friend, brought me so many new things, I’ve lost count . 🙂

Yes, he has been a huge influence on me.

A very positive one!!.

Making New Friends

Following my friend to Twitter, I have made SO many new friends!.   They too, have inspired me, helped me with my blog, everyday stuff, cheered me up, and made me laugh. I continue to learn so much from them all everyday!.

Motivation and Inspiration

I have always loved a good quote.  I have found more amazing quotes on Twitter than I can honestly count.  I “favorite” and save all the exceptionally memorable ones.  I have so many I have begun to copy them all down on my PC.  Some days, a good quote can make your day, turn it around or possibly even keep you going.  I have even had Facebook friends ask where I get all the great quotes!.

For my blog, and for me personally, so many Twitter quote accounts, are amazing for finding motivation and inspiration.

If You Have A Blog

Twitter has been an amazing tool in learning “how” to blog and how to get my blog out there into the world!. I have learned all about blogging from a handful of people I have come to respect and admire.  Watching them, how they talk to their readers, how they treat them, seeing what people are interested in reading has been a great help to me.  Seeing So MANY bloggers on Twitter I have learned so much.

(I am planning on writing a post of all the great bloggers I have met through Twitter and respect as blogger and people.)

The Wrap Up

The point is not what it has brought to me, but what it will bring to you.  These are just a few reasons I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, ADORE.. Twitter.

Twitter has been a blessing and gift to me…   You’ll have your own reasons you love Twitter!

It can bring you totally different things than it has brought me, but they will be just as meaningful to you, as mine are to me!.

Why not try it out?  Trust me, knowing what I have received and continue to each day from Twitter……….my best advice to those who don’t “Tweet” , is …

Get Involved!

Try Twitter!

It could be one of the smartest things you’ll ever do, and you might like me, receive

What Would You Have Done ?

Life is about trying to be the best we can be, doing our best to achieve our dreams and helping others do the same.   People can make all the difference in the world in our “reach for more”.  We can learn so much

from each other.

With that said…

Sometimes we have something come upon us, and it gives us a opportunity to be a better person or shine a light on the best in who we already are.

This post is about someone who saw a situation in front of him and didn’t let it just pass him by, but decided to do something about it, then took action.

Officer Lawrence Deprimo.

Officer Deprimo is a Police Officer in the New York Police Department.  One night he was on duty working a counterterrorism post when he came upon an older man who was bare footed.  He disappeared for a few seconds and when he came back to where the older man was he had with him a new pair of boots for him.  Then he knelt down to help the man put them on.

There was a tourist from Arizona who happened to see that moment and took this amazing, and moving picture.

kindness

After  Jennifer Forster,  the tourist, took this picture she posted it to the Official New York Police Dept Facebook page.  It made Officer Deprimo an instant hero and celebrity.

On Facebook 1.6 million views of this picture have been noted nearly 275,000 “likes” and 16,000 comments have made this one-act of kindness and Officer Deprimo an Internet hero overnight.

Officer Deprimo said,

“It was freezing out and you could see the blisters on the man’s feet.”   I had two pairs of socks on and I was still cold.”

He talked to the man and found out his shoe size was 12.  Officer Deprimo then went into a Sketcher’s shoe store and bought the boots.  Officer Deprimo never did get the name of the gentlemen he helped.   He said of him,

“He was he most polite gentlemen I had met.”

He also said that the gentleman “lit up”,  at the sight of the gift.   He wanted to buy him a cup of coffee as well, but  Officer Deprimo said   “As soon as the boots were on, him, he went on his way, and I just went back to my post.”

Why This Story Is Important

This story didn’t touch everyone who heard it or read about it because it was the “holiday season“.    It resonated with so many because what Officer Deprimo did was not something you see people do everyday.  It resonated with so many because it touched a cord,

it touched our hearts.

So why, why don’t  see this kind of kindness more often?    Shouldn’t we ALL try to be as open and aware of our surroundings as Officer Deprimo was that night?    His one-act of kindness that was so simple, spread like wild-fire and touched so many that I’m writing about it, you’re reading about it and we are ALL learning from it.

Learning maybe we could be a little more open to seeing people and being more aware to the situations in front of us and around us that maybe, due to our own concerns of the day and our busy lives and our thoughts,  we look past  things, or maybe hurry by them,  instead of really LOOKING AT  them, people and situations that may need us to act.     It’s only human to get caught up in our own lives and caught up in the everyday rush.

But this is when I try to remember to ask myself.

“Aren’t we meant to reach for more?  Aren’t we all meant to… BE more?”.

I think we are.   Hey, I know we are.

So do you.

Whatever you are doing, stop.   Ask yourself this…..Would you have seen the opportunity in front of you the way officer Deprimo did that night and act upon it?  If the answer is yes,  then you are most likely doing pretty well out there, but if the answer might be no.  Ask yourself….. why?.

Do you usually see or notice the world around you, or are you usually just hurrying, rushing through your day and basically just trying to get to the next task.

What We All Need To Realize

Next time you feel yourself hurrying through your day or rushing through to the next thing on that “To Do List” we all have….. stop.    Take a couple of minutes to just really stop, and look around you.   Whether you are at home or in the middle of “downtown wherever you live”.   Close your eyes, take a deep breath and let it out then open your eyes and look around you.

Just take time….. to notice life.

It happens 24/7 no matter what our schedules are and  it keeps moving.  Life doesn’t wait for us to finally take notice of it.   Next time you feel yourself rushing,  take a look around you and maybe just like Officer DePrimo,   you might find that right in front of you is an opportunity for you to be that better heart, soul, person, that person we are all meant… to try to be.

But most of all, we might find we have that golden chance, that blessing,  to positively affect or change the life of another.

I think we are given those opportunities everyday in big and small ways.   But sometimes we need to pay close attention because they don’t all come in ways that are so obvious, making it hard to recognize them at times. .  Sometimes they come in whispers. Those  are the opportunities that are to often, missed and over looked.

We need to take that moment more often.   Listen to those around us.  Our Family and friends,  listen to what they are really saying and pay more attention to what’s going on.    Maybe Officer Deprimo has very good listening skills and he’s very alert and aware being a New York City Police Officer.

Or maybe Officer Deprimo was just paying attention and listening that night to his what his heart was telling him.

I think there are people all over each day that do things just like this but we just don’t hear about them.  People who are really good at seeing situations and act on them.  To all of you,

Keep up the good work! ………….. And “thank you.”

To Officer Deprimo, Thank you sir for reminding us all of what kindness and compassion is.  No matter who we are,  a little reminder is only a good thing.

You know, WE CAN change the world.

How?

One Act Of Random Kindness At A Time.  🙂
